Chargers could be best in West
Huntington routs the Running Rebels, gains a chance to vie for the regional title. The Huntington Beach Pee Wee Green Chargers earned a berth in Saturday’s Pop Warner Football Western United States championship by routing the Mount Helix Running Rebels of San Diego, 38--8, in a Western Conference semifinal game Saturday.
The Chargers will meet the Mid-Valley Sun Devils Saturday at Murrieta to determine the best in the West in the Wescon championship final.
Earlier this month, Huntington captured the Orange County championship by defeating previously undefeated Santa Margarita to qualify for the Wescon playoffs.
The Chargers defense caught on to Mt. Helix’s deceptive wing T offense midway through the first quarter and held the Running Rebels in check for most of the game.
With outstanding play form its offensive line, Huntington was able to display a potent rushing attack and scored early and often to set up the rout.
“We had a strict defensive game plan this week to slow down their offense, and the kids implemented it perfectly,” Huntington coach Marc Dubois said. “These kids deserve to play in this championship game due to all their hard work during the off-season and at each practice.”
The Chargers scored first, converting a six-play, 86-yard drive keyed by a 74-yard run by Isaah Lumbruno. Cameron North provided the conversion to make it 8-0.
In the second quarter, Lumbruno scored his second touchdown, this one on a 22-yard run, to cap an 11-play drive for a 13-0 lead. On its next possession, Huntington needed just two plays to cover 67 yards, capped when Christopher Ogilvie took a toss and went 63 yards to the end zone.
Ogilvie finished the game with 124 yards on nine carries.
Mt. Helix scored with one second left in the first half to make it 22-8.
The Chargers didn’t let up in the second half. They took the kickoff and went 59 yards in five plays, with the final play resulting in a one-yard scoring run by Joey Sandoval. With two minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Chargers struck again when Lumbruno dashed 84 yards for his third touchdown.
Lumbruno powered his way for 209 yards on just six carries.
Ogilvie was in on 11 tackles -- six solo, Steven Springer nine tackles with five solo, Joshua Peth with nine tackles and two solo and Adam Spies eight tackles, three solo and two quarterback sacks.
The Huntington Beach Pee Wee Green Chargers are Lumbruno, North, Ogilvie, Sandoval, Springer, Peth, Spies, Sean Finley, Jacob Hauser, Curren Provost, Shay McAfee, George Jack Dennis, Eric Vogelsang, Taylor Schmidt, Colby LaBounty, Josh Schlichter, Brenton Visnoski, Mitchell Clark, Ryan Gross, Brandon Gauweiler, Josh Clay, Clayton Mase, Cole Fraser, Casey Harden, Christian Miller, Chris Dubois, Brandon Trulli and Robert Young.
