Chargers are best in West

Huntington scorches Sun Devils in final, repeats as champs. The Western U.S. Pop Warner Football Pee Wee Division championship final between the Huntington Beach Green Chargers and the Mid-Valley Sun Devils was no contest.

The Green Chargers made sure of it.

Rolling out to a 32-0 halftime lead, Huntington went into cruise mode and came up with a 39-14 victory in the Wescon title game at Murietta High to earn the distinction of being “best in the West” in its division.

Huntington won the western U.S. title for the second year in a row, and last year’s squad finished as national runner-up. But league rules this year stipulate that no Pee Wee Division team in the county would advance past the western U.S. final and on to this year’s national championships, Huntington coach Marc Dubois said.

The Green Chargers otherwise would have qualified for the national event by virtue of its win over Mid-Valley.

“Winning back-to-back Pop Warner western U.S. championships confirms that these kids make up a special team,” Dubois said. “We didn’t have a very good scout on Mid-Valley, but my coaches prepared them extremely well for the unpredictable.

“This team has more firepower than last year’s team, so I do wonder how we would do in the national championship playoffs this time around.”

Huntington took control of Saturday’s Wescon championship game by taking the opening kickoff and marching 79 yards for its first touchdown.

Isaah Lumbruno did the scoring honors, going sweep left for 70 yards to the end zone to make it 6-0. Two possessions later, Josh Peth took a toss left and went 52 yards for the next touchdown and a 12-0 lead.

The Chargers successfully recovered their second onside kick of the opening quarter -- this one recovered by Christian Miller -- and turned it into Lumbruno’s second touchdown run of the quarter, a 24-yard sweep. Cameron North provided the point-after to give Huntington a 20-0 lead.

A 63-yard, six-play drive in the second quarter resulted in Huntington’s fourth touchdown of the game, this one coming on a 14-yard run by Adam Spies. An interception by Cole Frasier put the Chargers in business again, and North’s 43-yard run resulted in a 32-0 lead.

Josh Clay scored on a one-yard counter run in the third quarter to cap the scoring for Huntington.

An overpowering Chargers defense saw Steven Springer come up with seven tackles (two solo), a quarterback sack and onside kick recovery. Christopher Olgilvie had seven tackles (three solo), Chris Dubois six (four solo), Spies six (three solo) and Peth six (one solo).

During its 12-0-1 season, Huntington outscored its 13 opponents 381-91 and posted four shutouts. Over the last two years, the program has gone 24-2-1.
