Laguna club baseball team wins pair

14-and-under locals down Aliso Viejo, Saddleback.The Laguna Beach Baseball Club’s 14-and-under team won its two most recent outings, defeating Aliso Viejo and Saddleback.

Laguna overcame a rocky start to rally past host Aliso Viejo at Woodsfield Park.

Laguna gave up five runs in the first inning and four more in the second to dig itself into a hole. Aliso Viejo produced those runs on seven hits and three walks.

Laguna did, however, score twice in the first inning and kicked its offense into high gear by scoring 11 runs in the fourth through sixth innings. They scored four times in the fourth, twice in the fifth and tacked on five more runs in the sixth.

Keying the offense was Jake Glazer with a single, Tyler Pierce and Raphael Vickers with a single and a double apiece, and Beau Hudson and Taylor Preston each with a double.

Vickers came on in relief at the start of the third inning and pitched the final four innings. He gave up just one hit and one run while recording five strikeouts.

Defensively, Alex Burk came up with a huge stop for Laguna with a diving catch in right field to prevent a sure hit.

Laguna Beach 11, Saddleback 0 A trio of Laguna pitchers combined to throw 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball to lead host Laguna at Alta Laguna Park.

Logan Schoembs and Raphael Vickers each pitched two innings of no-hit baseball. Alex Bekken pitched the fifth and sixth innings, giving up only one hit.

Offensively, leadoff hitter Matt Neev went three for three, Bekken doubled and singled, Schoembs and Taylor Preston had doubles and Raphael Vickers, Beau Hudson, Sean Pigden and Jake Glazer each had a single.

Jeff Kimborough dug out a couple of throws at first base, and Tyler Pierce made a few key stops at second.
