COSTA MESA PLANNING COMMISSION WRAP-UP

Here are some items the planning commission considered Monday.

LIQUOR STORE

Tri Harmony Properties LLC can open a specialty liquor store at the southwest corner of Harbor Boulevard and Adams Avenue, the commission decided. The store will sell imported beer and wine, gourmet foods and glassware.

Staff members recommended denying the store a permit because of the high concentration of liquor-sales licenses in the area, but the commission opted to allow the new store with certain restrictions.

WHAT IT MEANS

A new specialty liquor store will be opened at Harbor and Adams, but the store will not be allowed to sell tobacco, lottery tickets or other convenience store merchandise.

BRISTOL STREET GAS STATION

The commission rejected a request from Mendez Automotive Services to replace the Plaza Chevron Service Station at Bristol Street and Paularino Avenue with a new gas station, convenience store and car wash tunnel. Approving the new gas station would have required waiving some code requirements and allowing higher density on the site.

Planning staff members noted that nearby gas stations were able to stay within city codes, so to exempt Chevron would be an unjustified special privilege.

WHAT IT MEANS

The Chevron at Bristol Street and Paularino Avenue will not be rebuilt with a new convenience store and car wash.
