Sailors rack up awards

Newport Harbor boys’ water polo team totals six All-Sea View League selections, including three on the first team.Newport Harbor High had three first-team selections and three second-team picks as the Sea View League announced its all-league water polo teams.

The Sailors won the league title and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division I final, where they lost to Long Beach Wilson.

The Sailors’ contingent was led by first-team picks Clay Jorth, Clinton Jorth and Brett Auer. Seniors Telford Cottam and Parker Gregory and junior Bryce McLain made the second team.

Clay Jorth, a senior, had 48 goals and 12 assists for Newport Harbor, including two goals and three assists in the Sailors’ 14-11 loss in the Division I championship. Auer, also a senior, led the team in goals with 72, including a six-goal performance against Acalanes.

Sophomore Clinton Jorth made the first team, despite missing the Sailors’ final 12 games -- three of them league contests -- with facial fractures sustained in an Oct. 25 match against El Toro.

Among the second-team selections, Cottam finished with 56 goals, 11 assists and 13 steals on the season, and Gregory had 36 goals. McLain appeared in 25 of the Sailors’ 26 matches, averaging 9.2 saves per match.

Foothill’s J.W. Krumpholz was the league’s most valuable player, after scoring 81 goals this season.

Newport Harbor was the most honored school in the all-league awards, with six honorees. Foothill had five total selections, followed by Aliso Niguel and Woodbridge with three apiece and Irvine and Woodbridge with two each.
