Gift-wrapping by magnet school

Ocean View High School’s Business Academy, a magnet program with 138 students, is coordinating a gift-wrapping service at the Westminster Mall for the second year in a row.

The academy is working with several other community and service organizations to raise money for local students to help them with a college education. Also, a portion of the gift-wrapping proceeds will directly benefit the Simon Youth Foundation, a charitable organization that aims to foster and improve educational opportunities, career development, and life skills for at-risk youth through focused programs and initiatives.

The gift-wrapping store is on the second level in the JCPenney wing of Westminster Mall and is open daily through Dec. 24.

School ribboncutting ceremony

Lake View Elementary School in Huntington Beach will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the recent donation of a large, heavy-duty storage unit from the Huntington Beach Elks Lodge.

The school was running out of room to store its special-education gym equipment and asked the Elks for help.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday at the school, 17451 Zeider Lane.

Student tutors honored by school

The Huntington Beach City School District recognized students from Dwyer Middle School at its monthly meeting Tuesday. Students were given certificates honoring them for service as math tutors.

Math department co-chairwoman Deborah Clay recruited 40 students from her sixth-grade advanced class last year to participate in the peer-to-peer tutoring program. These students -- 10 in the morning and 10 in the afternoon each semester -- agreed to forfeit one semester of their elective classes to become math mentors for two students who entered middle school with math scores below the proficiency level.

Clay said she is hoping to expand the program to include more students. The students who were honored at the board meeting are also working toward earning a Presidential Service Award as well as the California Governor and First Lady’s Service Award.

During the same board meeting, President Catherine McGough was honored for one year of service as president of the Board of Trustees.
