Local wrestler have a blast at Beach Bash

Six wrestlers win division titles at Edison High event.The Beach Bash at Edison High held up to its name Saturday, and six local wrestlers claimed first-place finishes in their divisions.

The two-day tournament began Monday.

For host Edison, Jake Pinkham won at 189 pounds and Romney Fuga won at 275.

A third Charger, Cesar Renteria, came up with a highlight reel victory as he stormed back from an 11-0 deficit against Raneil Buenviaje of Jesse Bethel High of Vallejo, pulling out a 19-18 win and a first-place finish at 112 pounds.

Two Marina wrestlers also got into the mix: Michael Koehnlein (125) and Shaun Lin (130) earned first-place finishes.

Nathan Borden carried the banner for Huntington Beach, as the Oiler senior won the 160-pound class.

Edison finished third in a tournament won by Bakersfield. Marina placed eighth and Huntington was 16th.

In boys’ soccer:

Undefeated Edison was a 2-0 winner over visiting Estancia in nonleague play. Jordan Kato and Nick McEachin scored for the Chargers, and Dane Kaylor got the shutout in the net.

In a previous nonleague match, Jimmy Walker scored three goals to pace Edison in its 5-0 shutout of host Dana Hills.

The Chargers, who had won their first six matches of the season, were tied by Woodbridge, 1-1. Mike Miner scored for Edison.

“We’re playing really well right now,” Edison coach Charlie Breneman said.

In other nonleague play, Ocean View lost its game to Magnolia, 3-2.

In girls’ soccer:

Edison, rebounding from a shocking 5-0 loss to Long Beach Wilson, shut out visiting Villa Park, 2-0.

The Chargers struck for their first goal eight minutes into the match when a Kaitlin Thulin free kick found its way to senior Elyse Kirmaci, who headed the ball into the net just past the hands of Spartan keeper Kristen Olsen, who will play for USC next year.

The defensive play of juniors Corie McGuire and Jordan Crumby didn’t allow Villa Park any solid attack on net in the first half, which ended at 1-0.

Edison, which had several unsuccessful shots on goal early in the second half, scored its final goal when senior midfielder Candace Mecklenburg and freshman Alexa Enlow teamed on a goal to make it 2-0.

Sophomore keepers Cassie Becker and Keenan Castillo combined for the shutout, which coach Kerry Crooks described as a “good two-touch game.”

In other nonleague action, Huntington was shut out by Woodbridge, 2-0.

In girls’ water polo:

At the 32-team Villa Park Classic, Edison fell to Agoura, 12-7, in the fifth-place game, and Huntington lost to Arlington, 9-5, in the tournament’s seventh-place game.

In nonleague play, Edison sprinted past host San Clemente, 12-4, and Huntington defeated visiting Tesoro, 6-4.
