A Costa Mesa man is being held on suspicion of attempted murder after police found his brother-in-law with his throat slashed early Tuesday, police said.

Police believe the 4- to 6-inch-long cut in 40-year-old Usamni Mohammad Hashemee’s throat was made with a kitchen knife during a family fight in an apartment in the 300 block of Bay Street, said Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Marty Carver.

A witness provided information about the suspect, and police arrested Hedayet Khogyani, 24.

Hashemee, who is married to Khogyani’s sister, was taken to Western Medical Center in Anaheim where he was listed in critical condition as of late Tuesday. He is expected to survive, Carver said.

Khogyani is being held at Costa Mesa city jail on $500,000 bail.
