Edison, Marina host tourney

Top girls’ high school teams tip off at local holiday event.Girls’ prep basketball holiday action will take place at two local schools beginning Tuesday with the tipoff of the 2005 Larry Doyle Orange County Championships.

The tournament, featuring 16 teams, is hosted by Edison and Marina high schools.

The first two days of action, Dec. 27 and Dec. 28, will be played at Edison.

The tournament, named after the late Marina athletic director, shifts to Marina for games on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30.

The championship game is set for 8 p.m. Dec. 30.

Thirteen of the participating teams are from Orange County: Edison, Marina, Capistrano Valley, Aliso Niguel, El Modena, Esperanza, Rosary, San Clemente, Santa Margarita, Pacifica, Magnolia and Valencia of Placentia.

Two other CIF-Southern Section teams -- Thousand Oaks and Hart -- also will vie for the title, as will Central Hardin of Elizabethtown, Ky.

Below is a schedule of first-round games for Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Edison High:

Top Bracket:

Santa Margarita vs. Aliso Niguel, 9:30 a.m.

Marina vs. Pacifica, 11 a.m.

San Clemente vs. Valencia, 3:30 p.m.

Edison vs. Capistrano Valley, 5 p.m.

Bottom Bracket:

El Dorado vs. Thousand Oaks, 12:30 p.m.

Hart vs. Magnolia, 2 p.m.

Rosary vs. El Modena, 6:30 p.m.

Esperanza vs. Central Hardin, Ky., 8 p.m.
