Sailors earn 11 all-league selections

All-Sea View League football storyNewport Harbor’s Ryan Rippon was named Sea View League’s Offensive Player of the Year.Newport Harbor High senior tailback Ryan Rippon, who helped lead the Sailors to the CIF Southern Section Division VI football championship, has been named the Sea View League’s Offensive Player of the Year by the league’s coaches.

Rippon was joined on the All-Sea View first team by seniors Tom Jackson, Charles Schultz, Billy Munce, Jack Tracy and David Rosales, as well as junior Mike Calabrese.

Representing Newport Harbor on the second team were seniors James Coder, Delano McKenzie and Fernando Lara, along with juniors Jarrett Daniel and Nick Frazier.

Rippon rushed for 1,681 yards and 13 touchdowns on 229 carries, despite missing four games recovering from knee surgery.

His return the week before the start of league play helped the Sailors finish 11-3, 4-1 in the Sea View League. They shared the league title -- their second straight Sea View championship -- with Aliso Niguel and Laguna Hills.

Jackson, a second-team honoree as a junior at safety, was recognized at quarterback this season. He threw for 1,505 yards and 22 touchdowns. He completed 112 of 219 passes and scored four rushing touchdowns.

Schultz, a left offensive tackle, earned second-team honors as a junior. Along with Munce, a right guard, Schultz anchored a line that helped propel the offense.

Tracy played fullback after filling in for Rippon at tailback early in the season. He finished with 793 yards on 91 rushing attempts. He caught 11 passes for 126 yards and was an imposing lead blocker. He had five rushing touchdowns and four receiving.

Rosales, an outside linebacker, had 107 tackles and four sacks.

Calabrese, who began the season at defensive tackle but shifted to end, had seven sacks and 47 tackles.

Coder and Daniel were the Sailors’ one-two punch at receiver. Coder had 40 receptions for 449 yards and three touchdowns. Daniel caught 32 passes for 587 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also returned two punts for touchdowns.

Frazier’s team-leading 118 tackles at middle linebacker included 81 solo stops.

McKenzie had seven sacks and 48 tackles at defensive tackle.

Lara, a cornerback, made 51 tackles and intercepted five passes, four in the playoffs.
