Anteaters prevail

college roundup for Tuesday edition.IRVINE -- The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team defeated Winnipeg, 30-26, 30-20, 30-19, in an exhibition match Saturday to even its exhibition record at 1-1.

Jayson Jablonsky, a junior outside hitter, led the Anteaters with 15 kills.

The Anteaters hit .533 for the match, recording 48 kills in 75 attempts with just eight errors. UCI hit .789 in the second game.

Junior outside hitter Matt Webber recorded 11 kills and hit .688, while sophomore middle blocker Aaron Harrell hit .769 and junior middle David Smith hit .692 for UCI.

Harrell led the team with four blocks and two service aces and junior setter Brian Thornton had 37 assists and two solo blocks.

UC Irvine, which dropped its exhibition opener Friday to visiting Alberta, will open the regular season on Tuesday, when it plays host to Cal Baptist at 7 p.m. at Crawford Court.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Orange Coast 58, Palomar 41

SAN MARCOS -- The Pirates handled the Comets in the third-place game of the Palomar Tournament on Saturday.

The win upped OCC’s record to 16-2 as it heads into Orange Empire Conference action.

Coach Mike Thornton’s squad, ranked No. 4 in Southern California and No. 7 in the state, will open conference play Wednesday at Riverside, ranked No. 3 in Southern California and No. 6 in the state.
