Sailors surfers extend win streak

NEWPORT BEACH -- The Newport Harbor High surf team edged a strong Edison squad, 85-82, to capture its fourth consecutive victory at 56th Street on Thursday.

The meet was decided in the last shortboard heat when Daniel Shea took first place and teammate Nathan Petty finished second for Newport Harbor (6-3).

Joey Head won the first heat of the morning with a contest-high wave score of 5.0. The win was the fifth first-place finish of the year for Head.

In heat two, Chase Ayres rang up his fourth first-place finish of the year and Christian Morabitio took second for the Sailors.

Victor Done took second place and Stevie Farmer finished third in the third shortboard heat.

Chris LoMenzo finished second and Rob DeLorme took third in the boys’ longboard heat for Newport Harbor.

Taylor Simpkins took first place in the girls’ longboard heat for fifth time this season. Camille Collett finished second and Hailey Sandberg took third in the girls’ heat.

Newport Harbor will try to keep its winning streak alive when it takes on Aliso Niguel at 56th Street on Jan. 18.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Saddleback 39, Costa Mesa 33

COSTA MESA -- Down to just six players, the Mustangs wore down in the fourth quarter and lost a Golden West League game.

Tracy Bjelland scored 18 points and Jennifer Courtney grabbed 16 rebounds for Costa Mesa (6-10, 1-2).
