‘Eaters take down UCLA

IRVINE -- Matt Webber had a match-best 23 kills as UC Irvine knocked off No. 2 UCLA, 32-30, 30-28, 30-24, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match Friday.

The victory ended a six-match losing streak against UCLA for the Anteaters.

UCI (4-1, 1-0) entered the match ranked No. 9 in the nation. Jayson Jablonsky added 12 kills, and Paul Spittle had 11 kills and six digs. Brian Thornton dished out 51 assists for the Anteaters.

Newport Harbor High grad Jamie Diefenbach had eight kills for UCLA (2-2, 0-1).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

NORTHRIDGE -- The Anteaters made just seven first-half baskets and could not recover in a Big West Conference game Friday.

UCI (2-13, 0-3) trailed, 24-18, at halftime and was unable to cut much further into the Matadors’ lead.

Kirian Ishizaki scored 11 points to lead the Anteaters, making three three-pointers. Kelly Cochran grabbed 15 rebounds for UCI.
