An Alaskan chill in the land of sun

A weekend storm draws cold air from the north, causing local temperatures to drop into the 30s.If Monday morning seemed cold, you may have been feeling a chill that came all the way from the waters off Alaska.

National Weather Service observations show that at 6:50 a.m. Monday, the temperature near John Wayne Airport dropped to 39 degrees. National Weather Service forecaster Stan Wasowski said the storm that hit Southern California over the weekend caused some frigid air to travel south.

“It [the storm] helped pull that cold air in from the Gulf of Alaska,” he said.

Norris Tapp, general manager at Davey’s Locker Sportfishing, said business was good despite the morning chill.

“It didn’t appear to discourage any of the people this morning who went on a fishing trip,” Tapp said. “We had a decent load of people, about 30.”

Unusually cold weather such as that Monday morning happens sporadically in coastal Orange County, Wasowski said.

“Once, twice, maybe five times a year we get cool weather here in Southern California,” he said.
