Mustangs bested

COSTA MESA -- The Costa Mesa High girls’ basketball team earned a 35-29 lead over Ocean View in a Golden West League game Monday, but went cold and wound up falling, 43-36.

The Mustangs scored just one point in the final 3:46 to fall to 6-12, 1-3 in league. Costa Mesa, which has struggled with its field-goal percentage of late, was just 3 of 16 from the field in the final eight minutes.

Tracy Bjelland had 13 of her game-high 15 points after halftime, including eight in the third quarter to help the Mustangs take the lead.

Bethany Vergara added nine points and five assists, and Jennifer Courtney contributed 10 rebounds to go with her six points.

But Ocean View (4-0 in league) converted 9 of 14 free throws in the final quarter to overcome the hosts.

Costa Mesa shot only six free throws in the game, to the Seahawks’ 22, Mustangs Coach Jim Weeks said.
