Encore praise for Sailors

readyTHE LAST WORDNewport Harbor High School’s championship football season got what amounts to one final score this month: Seven players were selected to All-CIF teams and coach Jeff Brinkley was named Division VI coach of the year.

The highlight of the list was senior Ryan Rippon, named Division VI offensive player of the year after rushing for 1,681 yards and scoring 13 touchdowns in 10 games. He was joined on the teams by senior offensive tackle Charles Schultz; senior guard Billy Munce; Fernando Lara, a senior cornerback who had four of his five interceptions during the playoffs; junior receiver Jarret Daniel; Nick Frazier, a junior middle linebacker who led the Sailors in tackles with 118; and junior defensive end Mike Calabrese.

Those seven Sailors earned their recognition, and Daniel, Frazier and Calabrese have set high standards for their senior year.

Brinkley, in coaching his third championship team, again proved himself among the very best coaches in the area.

Congratulations.
