Sage Hill prevails

roundup for TuesdayNEWPORT COAST -- The Sage Hill School girls’ basketball team rallied from a 20-8 first-quarter deficit to claim a 53-44 nonleague win over visiting JSerra on Monday night.

Sage (18-3), ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division IV-A, used four second-quarter three-pointers by senior guard Laura Schaefer to pull within 29-26 at halftime.

The Lightning then used consistent defensive pressure to pull away in the second half and top the Lions (17-5), ranked No. 3 in Division IV-A.

Sage’s 6-foot-2 Yale-bound senior center Haywood Wright had 12 points, eight rebounds, eight steals and four blocked shots.

Schaefer finished with 12 points, while junior Katie Tyre (eight points and four assists) and sophomore Katie McKeon (seven points and four assists) also contributed for the winners.
