Tars open with two wins
LAKE FOREST -- Newport Harbor High’s girls’ water polo team had a pair of relatively easy victories on Thursday at the Irvine Southern California Tournament.
The Sailors -- seeded No. 1 in their pool -- opened the day with a 16-3 victory over Santa Monica, and followed it up with a 10-4 win against Dos Pueblos. Both games were played at El Toro High.
Mimi Bury scored a team-best four goals for Newport Harbor (20-3) against Santa Monica. Kally Lucas added three goals and two steals, and Leah Robertson chipped in with two goals, three assists and two steals -- also making two saves in goal.
In the second game, Lucas tallied seven goals for the Sailors. Calli Manderino added two goals, and Elizabeth Layton had nine save in goal and three assists.
Newport Harbor will meet Villa Park in a third-round game at 6 tonight at El Toro High, with the winner advancing to the semifinals.
