Man shot at while chasing burglars

A Costa Mesa man was shot at three times after chasing three men he saw trying to break into a neighbor’s car early Saturday, police said.

The man heard breaking glass and saw people attempting to break in to a car in the 600 block of Brookview Way at 12:50 a.m. Saturday, police said.

When the man went outside to confront them, the burglars drove off; he followed them in his own car, said Costa Mesa Lt. Dale Birney.

The cars were heading north on Bristol Street when the burglars’ vehicle stopped just before a freeway onramp.

A passenger leaned out the window and fired three shots from a handgun at the witness’ car.

The man was not hit by the gunfire and decided not to stop pursuing the burglars.

The car was described as a dark colored, possibly foreign model, four-door sedan, Birney said.
