games canceledBrush fire forces postponement of five games involving area teams. Most will be made up today or Friday.Several area prep teams had their games canceled Wednesday because of the ash in the air from a brush fire ripping through the Cleveland National Forest in eastern Orange County.

The Costa Mesa High and Newport Harbor High girls’ varsity water polo teams, the Estancia High and Newport Harbor boys’ varsity soccer teams and the Corona del Mar girls’ soccer team all had their matches postponed.

The Costa Mesa girls’ water polo team, which was scheduled to play Orange at home in a game with CIF playoff implications, rescheduled its match for Friday at 3:15 p.m. at Costa Mesa High, according to Coach Tim Postiff. It’s the Mustangs’ last regular season game.

If Costa Mesa wins, it takes second place in the Golden West League and moves on to the playoffs. If the Mustangs lose, they finish in fourth place in league and will miss the playoffs.

The Newport Harbor girls’ water polo team’s game at Laguna Hills was rescheduled for today at 3:15 p.m., at Laguna Hills High. The Sailors will attempt to finish their Sea View League season undefeated.

The Estancia boys’ soccer team’s game at Santa Ana High was rescheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. at Santa Ana High. The Eagles (10-10-1, 6-4-1 in league) need to win or tie to assure themselves of taking the third and last playoff spot out of the Golden West League.

The Newport Harbor boys’ soccer team’s game against Laguna Hills was rescheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. at Newport Harbor High.

Corona del Mar girls’ soccer coach Brian Middleton said the Sea Kings’ game at Northwood was postponed and that officials hoped to reschedule it for Friday at 3:15 p.m. at Northwood.
