BASKETBALL

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

The St. John The Baptist boys’ basketball team won two games -- defeating St. Hedwigs of Los Alamitos, 42-24, and topping St. Iranaeus of Garden Grove, 38-20.

Lisandro Tolentino, Sean O’Malley, Dereck Amendola, Joey Eggers, Tim Schaeper, Danny Herrera and Jonathan Truong played well.

JUNIOR BASKETBALL

GIRLS’ DIVISION 2

Patriots 27, Clippers 25: Nike Zak scored nine points -- including the game-winning basket with five seconds left -- Maddie Bauer added eight points and Sara Silverman had four points for the Patriots. Shannon Griffin had 18 points for the Clippers.

Green 23, Boltz 16: Six players scored for the Green, led by Emma Shimizu and Lindsay Dawson with five points each. Taylor Stefano led the Boltz with eight points.

Bruins 18, Lakers 17: Riki Archie and Regan O’Hara led the Bruins with six points each. Maddie O’Connor had 10 points for the Lakers.

BOYS’ DIVISION 3

Bruins 47, Suns 37: The Bruins were led by center Matthew Sherburne and point guard Jake Haar. Nick Belida, Clint Henderson, David Schaefer, Steven Guder and David Doran all stepped up in the absence of forward Ethan Hold.

For the Suns, Nate Pozin took on the playmaking duties as Nic Sargeant and Mario Nark missed the game. Brett Olson and Trent Dill were active defensively and on the boards, with great support from Michael Rouleau and Luke Phillips. Jack Williamson scored 30 points and led a comeback that fell short.

BOYS’ 8TH GRADE ALL-NET

South Bay Knights 55, Newport-Mesa Rippers 50: The Rippers, down by two points at the half, scored 17 points in the third quarter to take a four-point lead, only to see it wither away in the fourth quarter.

The Rippers were paced by Wes Shaw, who had 16 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks. Michael Borchard chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds, and Clay Friend had seven points and two assists.

Fletcher Della Grotta and Grant Johnson played excellent defense and combined for six points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Trevor Davis, Austin Quon and Danny Ingalls ran the offense, while Wes Woods and Jackson O’Connor combined for eight rebounds and four blocks.

BOYS’ 5TH GRADE ALL-NET

Newport Sailors 43, Fullerton Sharpshooters 21: Robbie Rettig and Max Stone led the Sailors (7-1) in scoring with 10 and seven points, respectively. James Newman, Nick Hanna and Blake Motal had six points each, Connor Kelly scored five points and Chris Okey added three points. Derek Kula, Kris Picarelli and Drew Olson had solid games.

Newport Sailors 38, Santa Ana Vipers 32: Chris Okey and Robbie Rettig led the Sailors (8-1) with 10 points each. Rounding out the offense were Max Stone with five points, James Newman and Nick Hanna with four points each, Connor Kelly and Blake Motal with two points apiece, and Drew Olson with one point.

Kris Picarelli, Derek Kula and Olson helped lead the Sailors’ defense, but it took a total team effort, including a big three-pointer by Stone, to overcome a first-half deficit. The Sailors were able to convert all six of their fourth quarter free throws.

GIRLS’ UNDER-12

Newport Beach 2, Costa Mesa 1: Bridget Lyons opened the scoring for Newport when she knocked in a rebound off of Holly Patrick’s shot. Madison Grant scored minutes later when she hit a rocket shot from just inside the 18-yard line.

Newport’s defense held Costa Mesa scoreless until late in the contest. Kellie Conant, Megan Bathen, Caroline Johnson and Marylou Kibin anchored the defense. Newport dominated the midfield with the play of Allie Pantoskey, Kylee Pochirowski and Cece Beck. Forwards Bailey McDaniel and Christine Jacques put constant pressure on Costa Mesa. Karli Leal was superb in goal, stopping several scoring opportunities.

Newport advances to the title game against North Irvine.
