Breakers shoot for title
Laguna Beach boys’ soccer team takes on Tesoro for league win.The Laguna Beach High boys’ soccer team concludes its regular season at 3:15 p.m. today at Pacific Coast League rival Tesoro.
Laguna, which is 8-1-2 in the league and 13-3-3 overall heading into today’s match, can earn an outright league championship with a victory over the Titans.
Today’s match was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but that game was canceled due to air-quality concerns as a result of the wildfire.
Previously, Laguna played what coach Giovanni Vlahos said was his team’s “most complete game” of the season, when the Breakers defeated rival Corona del Mar Monday, 3-0, to earn at least a share of the league title.
Laguna took the lead for good 20 minutes into the match when Brenden Hexberg made a pass to Derek LeBon, who sent a shot into the net from outside the 18-yard line.
It was the eighth assist of the year for Hexberg.
Laguna struck again when senior Danny Bober got the ball to LeBon, who was streaking down the right side of the field. LeBon settled before blasting the ball to senior Roman Fricker inside the six-yard line, and Fricker slipped the ball into the ceiling of the Sea Kings net for a 2-0 lead.
A little over 15 minutes into the second half, Hexberg beat the Sea Kings goalie in a one-on-one situation to score his second goal of the match. That goal completed the scoring, and gave Laguna a sweep of its rival this season.
“Our defense held strong once again,” Vlahos said.
