SAILING CLASSES

Basic Coastal Cruising Certification classes begin Jan. 21. The American Sailing Assn., in conjunction with SailTime’s fractional sailing program, is offering personal, one-on-one instruction in Newport Harbor. A six-week Basic Keelboat Certification Course will be offered by Orange Coast College’s School of Sailing and Seamanship. The course is designed for people with some sailing experience or who have graduated from an intermediate Lidos class. The class will meet Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 15 through Feb. 26 at the college’s sailing center, 1801 Coast Highway West, Newport Beach. Registration is $475. Information: (949) 645-9412.

A Basic Marine Weather class is being offered by Orange Coast College’s School of Sailing and Seamanship. The six-week course focuses on the fundamentals of meteorology and explores the driving forces of weather, the characteristics and movement of high and low pressure systems, associated fronts and cloud formation. The class meets Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 12 through Feb. 16 at the college’s sailing center, 1801 West Coast Highway, Newport Beach. Registration is $85. Information: (949) 645-9412.

A Coastal Navigation Certification class is being offered by Orange Coast College’s School of Sailing and Seamanship. The six-week course provides instruction in theory, practice and procedures for navigation and piloting. Class will meet from 7 to 10 p.m. on Thursdays Jan. 12 through Feb. 23 at the college’s sailing center, 101 West Coast Highway, Newport Beach. Registration is $190. Information: (949) 645-9412.

A Beginning Coastal Navigation class is being offered by the Orange Coast College School of Sailing and Seamanship. The class, which covers charts and plotting tools, will meet from 7 to 10 p.m. on Tuesdays Jan. 10 through Feb. 21 at the college’s sailing center, 1801 West Coast Highway, Newport Beach. Sailing Fascination offers classes in boating safety and sailing for persons with disabilities. Classes are held throughout the year on Tuesdays and Saturdays at the Balboa Yacht Basin, slip B1, 829 Harbor Island Drive, Newport Beach. Information: (949) 640-1678.

FISHING

Fishing classes leave Balboa Pavilion at 6 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. $125. (949) 673-2810.

Get to the Newport Pier early to watch the dory fishing fleet return with the fresh catch of the day. Fish are prepared for sale at McFadden Square, an open-air market.
