Get a local history lesson

Learn about Newport Beach’s 100-year history at the annual mayor’s dinner. The cocktail hour starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday followed by dinner at 7 p.m., with an address by Mayor Don Webb, who will talk about events leading up to the city’s centennial celebration later this year. Learn more about civil rights

The Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellows Series continues at UC Irvine with Mary Frances Berry, a longtime African-American activist and former chairwoman of the United States Commission on Civil Rights. Berry’s speech, entitled “Civil Rights in the United States: Past, Present and Future?” takes place Thursday in the UCI Student Center’s Crystal Cove Auditorium.

Art that’s right on the money

An opening-night reception will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday for the “Day Late, Dollar Short” exhibit at the Subject Matter gallery at the Lab, 2930 Bristol St., Costa Mesa.
