Life on a mission
The Daily Pilot asked fourth-graders at Newport Elementary School: “Would you have wanted to live on a mission?”
“No, because when the Indians were there, they had to give up their heritage and their culture to the Spanish.”
Olivia Muscatello, 9
Newport Beach
“No. I’d probably want to own my own land.”
Ian MacInnis, 10
Newport Beach
“No, because there were punishments if you did something wrong, and children did certain jobs I would not want to do.”
Elizabeth Muenchow, 10
Newport Beach
“Yes, because I would want to learn about the mission. Even though it would be harsh, it still sounds very interesting.”
Ryan Schroth, 10
Newport Beach
“No. First of all, if I was an Indian, we would get taken from our culture. For another thing, if I ran away, I’d have scars on my back because they’d whip me.”
