sports briefs for Tuesday sectionUCI SWIMMERS LAUDED

UC Irvine sophomore Randall Tom and junior Ashley DePaul were each named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week in men’s and women’s swimming, respectively, following their performance in UCI’s sweep at UC San Diego on Jan. 28.

Tom won all three of his events at the UC San Diego meet to lead the Anteaters to a 179.5-118.5 victory. He recorded a winning time of 1 minute, 50.16 seconds in the 200-yard butterfly. He also won the 200 breaststroke (2:05.68) and the 200 individual medley (1:51.94).

DePaul also won three events. She won the 200 fly (2:02.96), the 500 freestyle (5:01.50) and the 200 individual medley (2:05.87) to help the Anteaters defeat the Tritons, 198-101.

It’s the second time this season that both have been named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week.

EX-SAILOR RECOGNIZED

Newport Harbor High graduate Jeff Marshall was named to the Big Sky Conference’s Fall All-Academic team for football. Marshall, a junior offensive lineman at Montana, was one of 13 Grizzlies selected.

To be eligible, athletes must have participated in at least half of their team’s games in 2005, achieved a 3.2 grade-point average and completed at least one academic term on campus.

FOUR ‘EATERS HONORED

UC Irvine men’s water polo players Andrew Dunn, Matt Garcia, Jesse Hatch and Ty Newland have been named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Academic All-Conference team.

Dunn, a junior driver, scored 19 goals for the Anteaters, who were 18-12 and finished fourth in the MPSF Tournament. He compiled a 3.10 grade-point average.

Garcia, a junior goalie, had 99 saves in 14 games and posted a 3.35 GPA.

Hatch, a sophomore two-meter man, scored two goals and had a 3.02 GPA.

Newland, a sophomore driver, scored one goal. His GPA was 3.42.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, be at least a sophomore academically, attend the institution for one full academic year and have played in at least half of the team’s contests.

UCI’S SCHRAEDER LAUDED

UC Irvine senior men’s basketball player Ross Schraeder has been named second-team Academic All-District 8 by ESPN The Magazine.

Schraeder is majoring in sociology with a minor in education. Heading into Wednesday’s game against UC Riverside, he leads UCI in career three-point field goals (217), and is averaging a team-leading 12.6 points per game this season.
