AYSO AREA Q PLAYOFFS

BOYS’ UNDER-10 SILVER

Newport Beach 1, Tustin 0: Newport Beach won the Silver Division title with a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon. Newport Beach went 9-0-1 in the tournament, scoring 22 goals and allowing four.

The team members were Ryan Maister, Ryan Stone, Blake Sudeck, Matthew Devarian, Conner Devarian, Logan Miller, Kevin Fults, Hale Fuery, Julius Herzlinger, Nate Pozin, Jack Benziger and Nick Becker. The team was coached by Nick Becker Sr., Richard Benziger and Jimmy Stone

GIRLS’ UNDER-14 GOLD

Costa Mesa 6, Tustin 4: Costa Mesa completed an undefeated run to the Area Q championship with a shootout victory.

The game was a nail biter as Tustin jumped to an early lead in the first quarter, scoring two goals and pressuring Costa Mesa defenders Veronica Manzo, Stephanie Plascencia and Brittany Grimmett. Midfielders Carissa Reeve, Brittaney Beckworth and Alex Oseguera played superbly, helping the defenders hold back Tustin until halftime.

With the help of midfielders Justine Cathey, Brooke Perez and Bree La Bare, Kelsey Asher found an opening and belted a shot into the goal, putting Costa Mesa on the board. With new momentum, the team kept the pressure on until Plascencia found an opening and tied the score.

Defender Judy Dorado’s quick feet and goalkeeper Stephanie Fox were successful in defending the Costa Mesa goal as the game ended in a 2-2 tie, sending the game into a shootout. Morgan Pautsch volunteered to defend Costa Mesa’s goal. Costa Mesa’s Beckworth, Asher and Cathey each made their shots, while Pautsch held Tustin to two goals. Pautsch was fourth up and kicked a solid shot into the back of the net, clinching the victory.

CAL SOUTH STATE CUP

BOYS’ UNDER-12

MKSC 2, Desert United 2 (MKSC wins on penalty kicks, 3-2): With their third win, MKSC advanced to the Sweet 16. After regulation, the score was tied, 2-2, with goals by Peter Marquez and Matt Laughlin for MKSC. The teams went scoreless in two 10-minute overtime periods.

MKSC goalie Steven Barrera was outstanding and stopped two penalty kicks in the shootout. Scoring in the shootout for MKSC were Caleb Candelaria, Grady Howe and Connor Morrill.

The defensive effort included Drew Blumenthal, Dara Diba, Connor Morrill and Eric Zamucen. The offense of Caleb Candelaria, Matt Francini, Cole Gennrich, Brandon Hoover, Grady Howe, Matt Laughlin, Jack Percival, Peter Marquez, Kent Smith, Gustavo Venegas and David Verona kept MKSC in control of the game.

BASKETBALL

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

The school’s boys’ basketball team improved to 14-0 with a 39-24 victory over St. Irenaeues. Mike Pierce, Matt Viles, Jackson O’Connor, Andrew Roth, Fred Eggers, Angel Beas and Dereck Amadola played well for St. John The Baptist.

ALL-STARS

Newport Mesa National Junior Basketball has announced its boys’ seventh- and eighth-grade all-star teams. The squads will represent Newport-Mesa in NJB all-star tournaments, beginning next month.

The eighth-grade all-stars are Cecil Whiteside (Waves), Luis Gomez (Waves), Alex Swigert (Blue Devils), Jarrett Logan (Blue Devils), Jamie Heinecke (Tigers), James Seals (Bruins), Jake Manning (Bruins), Luke Christiano (Golden Bears), Jay Ordaz (Wildcats) and Scott Cook (Wildcats). The alternates are Jamie Wall (Trojans), Sunny Dharod (Golden Bears), Danny Sexton (Trojans) and Nico Napolitano (Waves)

The seventh-grade all-stars are: Zach Morton (Bruins), Spencer Rautus (Golden Bears), Adam Spies (Waves), Jason Cernius (Wildcats), Spencer Haly (Blue Devils), Thomas Danner (Blue Devils), Ryan Grable (Irish), Cody Caldwell (Irish), Chris Whitelegge (Tigers) and Alex Turney (Tigers). The alternates are Blake Thomsen (Irish), Sam Barkley (Irish) and Hunter Meece (Bruins).
