UCI’s Gorgen honored

Freshman pitcher, off to sizzling start, takes 2-0 record and 0.00 ERA into Saturday’s start at Cal State Fullerton.UC Irvine freshman Scott Gorgen, who continued his impressive baseball season debut with 8 1/3 shutout innings of two-hit pitching Saturday at Hawaii, has been named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Gorgen, who won his debut on Feb. 4 against Cal, is 2-0 this season and has not allowed an earned run in 14 innings. He has surrendered just four hits, has nine strikeouts and has walked two. Opponents are hitting .087 against Gorgen.

After giving up two singles in the third inning Saturday, the right-hander retired 17 straight before issuing a one-out walk in the ninth and leaving the game, a 1-0 Anteater victory.

Gorgen was 7-0 with an 0.60 earned-run average as a senior last season at Clayton Valley High in Concord, on his way to being named Bay Valley League Most Valuable Player. He struck out 71, allowed 27 hits and walked only six in 46 1/3 innings in his final prep campaign.

Gorgen is scheduled to start Saturday at Cal State Fullerton in the second of a three-game nonconference weekend series with the Big West-rival Titans. The opening game will be Friday night at Anteater Ballpark.20060216iur9nknc(LA)Scott Gorgen
