Lipold earns All-American nomination

Edison High senior forward T.J. Lipold is one of 80 high school basketball players in Southern California to be nominated to the 2006 McDonald’s All-American high school basketball team.

Lipold is one of 1,500 male and 1,000 female prep basketball players nationwide to be nominated by a committee of experts.

The final boys’ and girls’ All-American teams will have 12 players each.

The McDonald’s boys’ game will be played March 29 at San Diego State University and will be broadcast live by ESPN. The girls’ game will be at the same venue on April 6.

Next All-Comers meet set for Feb. 25

The third of three 2006 Huntington Beach High All-Comer Meets will be held at the high school’s all-weather track on Saturday, Feb. 25.

The meet will be composed of the following events, in order:

Track events, 9 a.m. start: 4-by-100-meter relay; 1,600 meters; women’s 100-meter hurdles; men’s 110-high hurdles; 400 meters; 800 meters; 300-meter intermediate hurdles; 200 meters; 3,200 meters; 4-by-400-meter relay.

Field events, 9:30 a.m. start: high jump; pole vault; long/triple jump (three jumps); shot put; discus.

Competitors are asked not to wear their high school uniforms.

Entry fee for competitors is $5, which includes unlimited entry to races and events, and $2 for spectators. There is no fee for coaches.

Oilers soccer star signs with Southern Utah

Huntington Beach High senior soccer player Kristen Fronk has signed a letter of intent to play at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah, the school announced this week.

Fronk, an all-Sunset League defender, is one of five players to sign with the Thunderbirds.

“Kristen is very smooth technically and has a brilliant first touch,” Southern Utah coach Brian Stock said in a statement. “She had good pace and is extremely tough. Kristen has a mature demeanor, and we expect her to grow to be a great leader in our program.”
