“We know we’re up against a solid team in Edison,” Chino Hills coach Don Grant said. “We haven’t seen tape on them yet, but we did get to see them play during the summer. They are a well-coached team and have plenty of good victories to their credit.”

T.J. Lipold leads Edison in scoring with nearly 17 points per game, and guard Tim Golden is averaging five assists.

“They are smaller than us, but they are an athletic, relentless team that plays very hard,” Ocean View co-head coach Jim Harris said of the Braves.

Senior forward Brad Sweezy leads Ocean View in scoring with a 15 points per game average and in rebounding with nine. Senior guard Diego Delgado averages 11 points, and senior forward Wynton Johnson averages seven rebounds.

First round

Division I-A

Wild Card “H” winner vs. Marina

(at Edison High, 7:30 p.m.)

Marina, which opens the playoffs with a “home” game at Edison High, won’t know who it will play in the first round until later tonight. The winner of tonight’s wild-card game between Golden West League runner-up Saddleback and Mission Viejo, the No. 3 team out of the South Coast League, will travel to face the Vikings.

Marina, seeded seventh in the division, is playing its first-round game at Edison because the Marina gymnasium is one of the host sites Saturday for CIF-SS wrestling finals.

“Our group has really become unified, and they are playing well right now,” Marina coach Butch Fredlow said. “We’ve had great chemistry and great team leadership from the players.”

Senior forwards Erin Barney (averaging 12.3 points and 6 rebounds) and Allison Budzinski (10.3 points, 5 rebounds) and senior point guard Rachael Maulit (4.7 assists, 4.6 steals) are among the leaders on the court for Marina.

Chino Hills vs. Huntington Beach

(at Huntington Beach High, 7:30 p.m.)

Huntington comes into this first-round game with a 20-6 record and a runner-up finish in the Sunset League.

Chino Hills, meanwhile, is the No. 3 team out of the Sierra League and went 18-9 during the regular season.

“We play in a pretty good league that I’d say is probably pretty comparable to the Sunset League,” Chino Hills coach John Gottbrecht said. “We’ve got a great senior group. We’re not world-beaters, but we can play.”

Leading the Huskies in scoring is senior guard Jennifer Wong, who averages 17 points. Two other seniors, guard Daeshawn Page and forward Courtney Smith, are other leaders for the Huskies.

Huntington is led in scoring by freshman guard Noe Viloria (averaging 12.7). Jasmine Erving, who missed nine games this season due to injury, came on strong with 24- and 21-point performances late in the season against Marina and Edison, respectively. The sophomore center has built her scoring average back up to nearly 11 points per game and averages seven rebounds.

Senior point guard Laura Moore has become a team leader through her defensive play and assists, and freshman guard/forward Rita Sitivi averages 7.4 rebounds.

“We’ve made some adjustments on both sides of the ball late in the season, and I think we’re peaking at the right time,” Huntington coach Russell McClurg said.

Edison vs. Mira Costa

(at Mira Costa High, 7:30 p.m.)

Edison was one of eight schools to receive an at-large bid in the division. The Chargers, who enter the playoffs with a 15-10 record, take on the Mira Costa Mustangs, a squad that is 18-9, finished second in the Bay League and comes into the playoffs on a two-game losing streak.

During the regular season at Mira Costa, Edison lost a one-point game to the Mustangs. The loss was one of several close-call losses during the season for the young Chargers -- of their 10 losses, four came in overtime.

Mira Costa’s Mikah Maly-Karros, the daughter of former Dodger Eric Karros, led the Bay League in scoring, rebounding and blocks. She’s averaging 18 points per game.

Junior guard Wahine Kepilino (11.3), freshman guard Kelly Peterson (10.7) and junior guard/forward Simone Ibbotson (10.7) are averaging double figures in scoring for Edison.

“We’re excited for the challenge to play them again,” Edison coach Cory Kelly said. “We know they’re a good team, and we’re playing really well right now.”

Division III-AA

Golden West League champion Ocean View (21-5) drew a first-round bye. The Seahawks, the division’s No. 8 seed, will begin playoff action with a second-round home game against the winner of tonight’s first-round game between San Gabriel Valley League runner-up Gahr and La Quinta of Westminster, which tied for third-place in the Garden Grove League. Gahr is seeded ninth.

“We have a young team, but we have the tools to make a deep run in the tournament,” Ocean View coach Jim Harris said. “The key to our success will be our ability to keep turnovers down.”
