Deadline nears for Festival artists

Artists wishing to exhibit at this summer’s Festival of Arts are invited to submit slides of their best artwork and a completed application form to the Festival of Arts by Tuesday, Feb. 28. Applicants may request an application form by calling the Festival of Arts at (949) 464-4234.

The Festival is a regional exhibit, accepting applications from artists residing in South Orange County cities. Jurying fees are $30 per medium submitted.

According to Jack Archer, exhibit and artist activities director, “The art must be original, meaning done by the applicant and not reproduced, and meticulously crafted.”

The Festival of Arts will run from July 2 to Sept. 1 in the Irvine Bowl Park. Artists and craftsmen of the area may display and sell only original works of art during this show. The Festival of Arts is a non-profit organization. Proceeds go to support the arts in Orange County.

Mariachi Divas in concert

The Mariachi Divas will perform their “kicky” hybrid style of music combining mariachi, salsa, merengue and jazz at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Artists Theater, 625 Park Ave.

Founded in 1999, the all-female ensemble is a multicultural group represented by women of Mexican, Cuban, Samoan, Argentinian, Colombian, Japanese, Puerto Rican, Swiss and Anglo descent. They are presented by Laguna Beach Live.

Seeman sculpture dedication

“Rotating,” a sculpture by Jon Seeman, will be unveiled at 375 Broadway in a city-sponsored dedication ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 2.

The sculpture is on loan from the Festival of Arts.

A reception will follow at the Diane DeBilzan Gallery 224 Forest Ave.

‘Pride and Prejudice’ continues film series

The Weekend Foreign and Indie Film Series continues at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday with Golden Globe Winner and Academy Award-nominated “Pride and Prejudice” at South Coast Cinemas, 162 S. Coast Highway.

Also holding over is “Paradise Now,” which follows two Palestinian friends recruited for a strike on Tel Aviv.

The Weekend Indie and Foreign Film series is run by Jordan Sinclair, Laguna Beach High School senior and president of the school’s Independent Film Club.
