Local roll call for Patriots Day Parade

Local Vietnam Veterans are seeking other veterans of the war to march with them in the Saturday, March 4 Patriots Day Parade.

The veterans have reserved a spot in the parade. The group has participated in the parade since 1985.

Veterans are encouraged to wear their uniforms. The group will form near the high school, 625 Park Ave., between 9 and 10 a.m. Those who want to join should ask at the check-in booth at Park Avenue and Short Street to find the exact location of the group.

The parade will cover about six blocks and begin at 11 a.m.

The group will hold its traditional after-parade get-together, with friends and family invited, immediately following at the Marine Room, 214 Ocean Ave.

Dicterow announces political plans

Laguna Beach Mayor Pro-tem Steve Dicterow announced Monday his candidacy for re-election to the City Council.

Dicterow’s 2006 campaign kick-off party is slated for 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 5 at the home of Larry and Cathy Nokes, 3149 Bonn Drive.

Volunteers needed for creek restoration

The City is completing a community restoration project for a small section of Laguna Canyon Creek near the Dog Park. A primary project goal is to improve the creek habitat by removing non-native plants and replanting with native trees and shrubs. The project is ready for the replanting of the native trees and shrubs.

Interested individuals and groups can help with the replanting effort from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 25 and Sunday, Feb. 26. Contact Craig Justice at (949) 497-0781 to sign up.

Environmental report meeting scheduled

The scoping session for the Village Entrance Environmental Impact Report will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 8 in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 505 Forest Ave.

The session will take place prior to the Planning Commission meeting.

Mayor’s State of the City speech on tap

Mayor Elizabeth Pearson-Schneider will deliver her State of the City address at the next networking luncheon sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

The meeting will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 at Tivoli, Too!, 777 Laguna Canyon Road. Tickets, $20 for members, $25 for non-members if purchased by 5 p.m. Friday, March 3; $25 for members and $30 for non-members if purchased at the door.

Street lights set to be replaced

Southern California Edison is planning to replace 97 steel street lights throughout the city beginning in April, City Manager Ken Frank said.

The poles will be replaced with gray concrete poles, and the new light fixtures will have the flat, low-glare lenses. Half of the poles to be replaced are on Coast Highway.

Additionally, 92 old light fixtures with the globe-type lenses will be replaced with the flat, low-glare fixtures.

City committees seeking new applicants

Openings are available on four City Council-appointed committees: Techcomm Committee; Heritage Committee; Parking/Traffic/Circulation Committee; and Recreation Committee.

* The Techcomm Committee has four openings. It advises the council in telecommunications issues, including cable TV service, Internet access, etc.

* The Heritage Committee has four openings. It advises the council on historic preservation.

* The Parking/Traffic/Circulation Committee has one opening. It advises the council on matters relating to parking, traffic, circulation, transit, the parking management plan, and traffic complaints.

* The Recreation Committee has two openings. It advises the council on park and recreation needs.

Laguna Beach residents who are interested in an appointment to a committee should obtain an application from the City Clerk’s office at City Hall, 505 Forest Ave., and file it by 5 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 21. Information: (949) 497-0705.

Roadworks ongoing

Periodic closures of portions of Coast Highway at Anita Street may be expected over the next two weeks with the construction of a new sewer force main.
