AYSO AREA Q PLAYOFFS

BOYS’ UNDER-10 GOLD

Corona del Mar Region 57 reached the semifinals of the tournament, losing to North Irvine in a penalty kick shootout. The score was tied, 1-1, after regulation.

Corona del Mar advanced to the semifinals with victories over Newport Beach Region 97 (3-0), Costa Mesa Region 120 (3-0) and Yorba Linda/Placentia Region 1398 (1-0), and draws with Tustin Region 96 (2-2) and South Irvine Region 213 (1-1).

The team is made up of Matthew Elmajian, Drew Hanson, Justin Hanson, Ryan Cargile, Jack Klein, David Karamardian, Jeffrey Meyer, Brett Greenlee, Brandon Wolfe, Connor Kelter, Max Premer and Daniel Munoz. The team is coached by Marty Klein and Chuck Cargile.

VOLLEYBALL

JUNIOR HIGH PLAYOFFS

The seventh- and eighth-grade teams from Corona del Mar High School/Middle School won championships last weekend in league playoffs.

The seventh-grade team swept Sowers Middle School in the semifinals, 25-18, 25-15, before defeating Dwyer Middle School, 25-11, 25-18, in the championship match.

The eighth-grade team also swept its matches, defeating Dwyer, 25-11, 25-14, in the semifinals, and taking down Ensign Intermediate School, 25-15, 25-16, in the finals. The eighth-graders went undefeated this season.

The teams were coached by Gary Crane and Mary Mix.

BOYS’ DIVISION 1

Blue Devils 46, Irish 34: The Blue Devils (7-1) were led by Spencer Haly, who had a breakout game with 19 points and 11 rebounds, Alex Swigert with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Jarrett Logan with 10 points and nine assists.

Sam Barkley led the Irish with 10 points, and Cody Caldwell and Ryan Grable with eight points each. Franklin Chapelle scored his first basket of the year.

Tigers 42, Wildcats 30: The Tigers (6-2) were led by All-Stars Jamie Heinecke, Alex Turney and Chris Whitelegge. The Wildcats were paced by all-stars Jay Ordaz, Jason Cernius and Scott Cook, who combined for 28 points and 15 rebounds.

Golden Bears 36, Bruins 33: The Golden Bears (3-5) were led by all-star Luke Christiano, who had 20 points and five assists.

The Bruins played a solid game and were led by all-stars James Seals, Jake Manning and Zach Morton, who combined for 27 points and 21 rebounds.

Waves 54, Trojans 38: The Waves (8-0) were led by Nico Napolitano’s eight points, two blocked shots and two steals. Zach Asdourian added six points and six rebounds, and Henry Crockett scored his first two points of the season and played great defense.

The Trojans were led by all-star reserves Danny Sexton and Jamie Wall.

BOYS’ EIGHTH-GRADE ALL-NET

Newport-Mesa Rippers 58, Whittier Suns 49: The Rippers (8-7) came out strong and won by nine. Austin Quon led the team with 15 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Fletcher Della Grotta poured in a season-high 10 points and had two assists.

Wes Woods, Wes Shaw and Michael Borchard were dominating in the paint, combining for 19 points, 24 rebounds and five blocks. Clay Friend, Trevor Davis, Danny Ingalls and Jackson O’Connor played well in the win.

Yorba Linda Swish 61, Newport-Mesa Rippers 55: The Rippers were led by Wes Shaw, who scored 13 points and also had 10 rebounds and five blocks. Wes Woods had his best performance of the season with 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

Michael Borchard chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Trevor Davis added seven points, four assists, six rebounds and two steals.

BOYS’ FIFTH-GRADE

ALL-NET GOLD

Newport Mesa 50, Chino 35: The Bruins ran their record to 9-0 with the victory. The leading scorers for the Bruins were Zack Cornwell with 12 points, Ryan Griffin with eight, Chris Nealey with seven and Nic Roco with six.

Reid Meckler, Andy Doka and Blake Grable led the Bruins with their strong defensive play.

Newport Mesa 53, San Clemente 32: The Bruins remained undefeated with the win. Their leading scorers were Jack McBean with 18 points, Rob Rosenast with 10 points and Zack Cornwell with eight points.

Chris Nealey, Ryan Griffin, Cayman Carter and Nic Roco led an impressive defensive effort in the second half, limiting San Clemente to 14 second-half points.
