UCI WOMEN AT MPSF MEET

The UC Irvine women’s track and field team will compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at Dempsey Indoor Stadium in Seattle, Wash., today and Saturday.

UCI freshman Lauren Collins has the fifth-best mark in the high jump (5 feet, 7 inches) entering the meet after winning the event at the Air Force Invitational earlier this month. UCI’s Danielle St. John (5-5 3/4 ) ranks 13th and Orlisha Henlon is 15th (5-5) in the MPSF top marks’ list. Collins ranks 14th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.10, Erricka Williams is 16th in the triple jump (37-5) and Henlon is 17th in the long jump (17-11 1/4 ).

Collins and Orlisha Henlon are also scheduled to compete in the pentathlon. Collins has the 11th-best total (3,483 points) and Henlon the 12th-best (3,465) in the MPSF this season.

Amber Steen, who won the Big West Conference individual cross-country title in helping the Anteaters to the team championship this past fall, leads several UCI distance runners who will compete in Seattle.

The UCI men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams will compete in the 10th annual Carl Rossi Relays at Claremont on Saturday.

UCI GOLF EVENT

Coach Paul Smolinski’s UC Irvine men’s golf team will play host to the 26th annual Anteater Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa.

Joining the host Anteaters will be Arizona, UC Riverside, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Pacific, Santa Clara and Missouri-Kansas City.

Competitors are scheduled to play 36 holes Monday and 18 Tuesday.

UCI is ranked No. 56 nationally in the Golfweek/Sagarin index and No. 66 in the GolfStat Head-to-Head standings. The Anteaters were No. 7 in the Pacific Region in the final fall poll.

Junior Brian Edick leads UCI with a 72.6 scoring average and three top-10 finishes through 18 rounds in 2005-06.

Sophomore Garrett Sapp follows at 73.9, with sophomore Derek Uyesaka (74.0), sophomore Kenny Kim (74.2) and freshman Tim Cha (74.2) rounding out the UCI leaders.
