Lions sweep awards

Vanguard University dominated the top of the All-Golden State Athletic Conference basketball teams, which were released Tuesday.

Kelly Schmidt was named the Player of the Year in women’s basketball, while Horace Wormely received the same honor in men’s basketball. In all, four Vanguard women and two men made the all-conference squad.

Schmidt averaged 20.9 points and 7.7 rebounds for the Lions. The forward was second in the conference in scoring and sixth in rebounding. Her field-goal percentage of .586 was third in the conference.

Also honored from the women’s team were guard Jessica Richter, center Rachel Besse and point guard Tiari Goold.

Richter led the conference at 21.2 points per game, and led the conference with 4.11 steals per contest. Besse averaged 13.4 points and 7.3 rebounds a game for the Lions, and was second in the GSAC with 55 blocks. Goold averaged 8.6 assists a game to lead the conference, and was seventh in the GSAC at 2.46 steals per game.

Wormely was an all-around threat for the Vanguard men’s team, averaging 14.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 7.2 assists a game ? the latter tops in the conference. The senior was also seventh in the conference in steals with 1.73 per game.

Levi Seekins was Vanguard’s other representative on the men’s team. The senior forward was eighth in the conference in scoring at 16.3 points, and averaged 6.4 rebounds.

Hope International’s T.J. Hardeman was named the conference women’s coach of the year, with Azusa Pacific’s Bill Odell and San Diego Christian’s Kelvin Starr sharing the men’s honor.
