Volleyball clinic to open Monday

The Adam Johnson Volleyball Club Winter Clinic Series will begin a new session Monday at the Thurston Middle School gymnasium.

The clinics, which run through April 14, are designed to provide youths with the basic fundamental skills of indoor volleyball and give them “a great foundation to move forward in the sport and in life,” said Johnson, a former member of the United States National Team.

Four practice sessions are scheduled for the clinic. The clinic series schedule is as follows:

Girls and boys, second- and third-grades, 4-5:30 p.m. each Monday.

Girls and boys, fourth- and fifth-grades, 4-5:30 p.m. each Wednesday.

Girls and boys, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grades, 5-6:30 p.m. each Friday.

Due to the high volume of participants, second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students must sign up on the appropriate clinic days. Each clinic is limited to 15 participants on a first-come, first-served, basis. For early registration, e-mail adam.johnson@cox.net.

The cost is $160 per youth. Fees will be prorated if a player joins a session already in progress. Paper work will be available at the first session, or can be obtained online at ajvolleyball.com, listed under “club entrance.”

Johnson, a Laguna Beach resident, is a five-time U.S. Open champion, two-time Manhattan Beach Open champion, named “King of the Beach” in 1994, a world champion in 1992 and a silver medalist at the 1987 Goodwill Games. His 44 victories puts him at No. 9 on the Assn. Of Volleyball Professional’s all-time wins list.

He’s the club director and coach for the Adam Johnson Volleyball Club. He coached the Nike Laguna Beach 14’s girls’ Open Division team to a fifth-place finish at the 2004 United States Volleyball Assn. Nationals.

Johnson and his coaching staff will conduct the clinics.
