Matchups set for June vote

Friday was the deadline for candidates in many local, state and federal races to file papers to appear on the June 6 ballot.

The primary returns to June, for the first time since 1998. The ballot will include primary elections for Newport-Mesa’s two members of Congress, as well as the area’s state Assembly members and county supervisors.

Also on the ballot are a number of other state offices ? governor, to name one ? and various Orange County offices. The winners from each party will face off in the Nov. 7 general election.

What’s not on the June ballot is Newport-Mesa’s state Senate seat, the 35th District, left vacant in December when John Campbell was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. The two Democrats and one Republican running for that office will meet in a special open primary on April 11.
