COSTA MESA PONY

Costa Mesa Angels 4, Newport Harbor Desquin & Company 3: Ryan Boulger struck out 10 over six innings to get the victory. The offense was provided by P.J. Maloney, who went 2 for 3, and Garrett Hirsch, who drove in two runs.

Costa Mesa Angels 5, Costa Mesa Dodgers 3: Matt McEachern hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for the Angels.

P.J. Maloney pitched six innings, striking out nine, in the seven-inning game. Brandon Kelly was solid at shortstop for the Angels. Andrew Albers went 2 for 3.

Newport Harbor Outback Steakhouse 5, Costa Mesa Yankees 4: The Yankees scored three runs, but stranded the tying run at third base in the seventh inning.

Costa Mesa Yankees 5, Newport Harbor Desquin & Company 4: The Yankees rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Kyle Orton singled in the tying run, while Mark DeFrenza then hit a walk-off single to win it. Victor Trujillo and De Frenza combined to hold the opposition to four runs on four hits. Tyler Peterson had an exciting steal of home.

Costa Mesa Dodgers 6, Newport Harbor Carl’s Jr. 2: The Dodgers sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring all six of their runs. The inning included a double by Brian Waldron to drive in the first run. Eric Ronquillo, Waldron, Kamran Qureshi, Ryan Cherney, Coleman Brown and Javier Munoz scored in the inning.

Derek Amendola threw four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out nine. Corona Del Mar rallied late in the game, with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ryan Cherney then settled down to get the final four outs.

Newport Harbor New York Hardware 8, Costa Mesa Eagles: Kyle Myres hit a three-run double in the second inning for the Eagles. Eric Gomez pitched early and looked solid.

MUSTANG DIVISION

Sun Cal Companies 11, BMW 0: The score was 2-0 in the third inning, when Sun Cal Companies opened things up. Sun Cal received strong pitching from Justin Dearmond, Christian Watson and Cory Stowell as the trio combined for one walk. Sun Cal was led offensively by Sean Cox with two hits and three RBI. Jake Parks had two hits and Cole Chapin chipped in as well. Taylor Decotis handled the catching duties and led the Sun Cal defense.

BRONCO DIVISION

Beach Pit BBQ 14, The Arches 4: After spotting The Arches a three-run lead, Beach Pit exploded for four runs in the third inning and eight more in the fourth.

Pitchers AJ Swies and Sean Goodwin kept The Arches bats at bay all day. Swies struck out eight batters in three innings of work, while Goodwin gave up no runs and struck out three hitters in two innings on the hill.

For the Arches, pitchers Max Richley and Blake Bell pitched well. Richley, Jack Kanen and James Jarvis all made solid contact at the plate. Jarvis had back-to-back stellar plays at third base for the Arches.

On offense, Beach Pit was led by AJ Talbott, who went 2 for 3 with three RBI. Swies, Christian Comet, Goodwin and Kyle Benter had multiple hit games as well. Talbott and Brennan Callahan made outstanding plays in the outfield on defense.

LITTLE LEAGUE

MAJOR DIVISION

White Sox 1, Devil Rays 0: Kory Benion’s RBI single in the fourth inning drove in Austin McArdle with the game’s only run.

McArdle led off the fourth with a single. Trace Curet walked and Tom Werdel was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Benion.

In the third inning, White Sox left fielder Jack Carey caught a long fly ball by Wolfie Raus to maintain the shutout.

For the Devil Rays, Ryan Webber, Abel Garcia, Logan Benter and Josh Stubblefield had singles. Eric Kjos singled for the White Sox.

McArdle pitched three innings for the White Sox, with three strikeouts and no walks. Werdel pitched the final three innings with six strikeouts and one walk.

For the Devil Rays, Webber pitched the first three innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Martin Myszynski, who pitched two innings, also had five strikeouts and two walks.

MINOR DIVISION

Giants 12, Reds 8: The Giants scored five runs in the first inning on hits by Branden Arceyut, Ryan Adkisson and Alex Vasquez, and two in the second, helped by back-to-back doubles by Christian Arceyut and Matt Thomas.

The Giants scored two more in the third and three in the sixth, fueled by hits by Vasquez, Thomas and Ekolu Ledbetter-Garcia.

The Giants got great pitching performances from Thomas, Adkisson, Gabriel Ruan and Zach Shafer. Brandon Arceyut and Ledbetter-Garcia both made key catches in the outfield. Kaimon Brust and Shafer caught line drives in the infield and catcher Eric Molina caught a pop fly for the final out.

T-BALL

Giants vs. Mets: Connor Walsh cracked the first hit of the season and Tanner Hastings, Jesse Estrada and Trevor Pacheco each pounded the ball through the infield to load the bases for the Giants. Hayden Pearce then pounded the ball to deep center field for a grand slam.

Connor Hamm made several key defensive plays at shortstop to contribute for the Giants and Cameron Hamm had several stops in the outfield. Clayton Adkins had consistent at-bats and solid hits for the Giants.

Cardinals vs. Pirates: The Cardinals had a spectacular opening day and looked like a team with a lot of experience. They all played an excellent game both offensively and defensively against the Pirates.

Brandon Ehrlich, Delani Guyot, Cassidy Harrison, Daniel Hendrickson, Alfredo Montes, Matthew Rodgers, Kevin Volk, Joey Wakely and Ian Robbs all had multiple hits throughout the game. Ehrlich and Rodgers combined for a great play to get an out at first and Wakely made a great play at pitcher for an out.

MAJOR DIVISION

Angels 4, White Sox 2: It was a classic pitching duel with a combined 30 strikeouts. Evan Daniele had 11 strikeouts for the Angels, while Andrew McCormack kept the game scoreless with eight of his own for the Sox. Tommy Bubonic relieved Daniele for two strong innings of work, striking out five.

With the score tied, 0-0, in the fourth, the Angels’ Cort Hastings (2 for 3) doubled to right field and then stole third. With two outs, Mitchell Meleski hit a hard line drive to second, but the White Sox’s Casey Worden made a great catch to end the inning.

In the sixth inning, Hastings singled to right with one out, Matt English (2 for 3) followed with a single between third and short, and Daniele walked to load the bases. The Angels scored on a bases-loaded walk, adding three more on an error and a walk.

The White Sox tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth when Anthony Daboub’s single scored a run. Another run was walked in, but Bubonic struck out the final batter with the bases loaded.
