JUNIOR BASKETBALL

BOYS’ DIVISION 1

Trojans 52, Rancho Santa Margarita Trailblazers 14: The Trojans (4-0) won their division playoff bracket with scoring from Jamie Wall (17 points), Marcus Mercada (16 points) and Garrett Kerr (12 points).

Kerr anchored the defense with 11 rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal. Jack Killelea also played tough defense and added 10 rebounds. Danny Sexton, Taylor Wildman and David Fink contributed to the victory.

Waves 59, Garden Grove Tar Heels 50: The Waves (12-0) ended an undefeated season, winning the league and sectional championship.

Cecil Whiteside paced the team with a season-high 34 points, 21 rebounds and four blocked shots. Daniel Degree, Luis Gomez, Adam Spies, Justin Wilson, Kian Alisobhany, Nico Napolitano, Henri Crockett and Zach Asdourian turned in their best efforts of the season, shutting down the Tar Heels offense.

Tigers 42, Capo-Dana Cobras 25: The Tigers (9-3) capped a strong season by winning the sectional championship. Jamie Heinecke led the team with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Alex Turney ran the offense with precision. Chris Whitelegge, Scott Pantoskey, Patrick Pearson, Kevin Pinelli, David Rabosky, David Silverberg and Wyeth Rietvold played well in the finals.

Fighting Irish 50, Placentia Swish 30: The Irish continued their luck, winning the sectional championship, led by Ryan Grable and Tim Frydendall with 12 points each. Sam Barkley added 11 points and Cody Caldwell had six points. Carter Gaskill, Justin Ruffalo and Macklan Weinstein played great defense.

Wildcats 45, Garden Grove Spurs 41: The Wildcats (7-5) capped a solid season by winning the sectional championship. Leading scorer Jay Ordaz finished with 19 points, while Jason Cernius had 10 points, two assists and only one turnover. Jake Starnes and Scott Cook hit clutch free throws at the end. Ron Ayzin, Brandon Pick and Nick Gooding played well.

Bruins 52, Huntington Beach Cobras 42: The Bruins (6-6) won the sectional championship. All-stars Jake Manning and James Seals combined for 32 points, 14 rebounds and four steals. Jonathan Knauer, Zach Morton, Charles Umansky, Tanner Trauthen and Ashton Meginnis played great in the final.

BOYS’ DIVISION 2

Newport-Mesa Lakers 38, La Mirada Lakers 36: The Newport-Mesa Lakers clinched the sectional title with a close victory. The team was composed of John Tourinho, Troy Reese, Cort Hastings, Jeff Lloyd, John Pagliassotti, Chase McElroy, River Robertson and Evan Gray. The team was coached by Duane Hastings, assisted by Gary Gray.

BOYS’ DIVISION 3

Newport-Mesa Bobcats: The Bobcats won their sectional, defeating And1 in a closely fought championship game on Sunday. The Bobcats were undefeated in the season-ending tournament.

Coach Steve Brahs attributed the Bobcats’ success to team play and contributions from every player. The team included: Alex Asdourian, Braden Brahs, David Karamardian, Michael Karamardian, Max Kline, Kavi Sakraney, Brady Shockey and Armen Shrikian. The Bobcats are coached by Steve Brahs and Vahe Karamardian.

ALL-NET DIVISION

BOYS’ EIGHTH-GRADE

Newport-Mesa Rippers: The Rippers went 1-2 in the super sectional tournament: beating Garden Grove, 54-44, and losing to Riverside, 56-46, and Placentia, 49-45. The Rippers (11-11 overall) were led by Trevor Davis, who had 31 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists in the three games. Wes Shaw had 20 points, 18 rebounds and eight blocks. Austin Quon and Danny Ingalls combined for 26 points, 14 assists and six steals, while Michael Borchard had 18 points and 23 rebounds.

Wes Woods, Grant Johnson, Jackson O’Connor and Fletcher Della Grotta combined for 54 points, 52 rebounds, seven steals and nine blocks.

Shaw and Borchard were named to the All-Net all-star team for 2005-06.

BOYS’ SIXTH-GRADE

Newport Mesa Blue Devils 50, Anaheim Hills Hawks 30: The Blue Devils won their super sectional tournament, their fourth in a row. Playing tough defense and unselfish offense, the Blue Devils built an early lead and held it throughout.

The Blue Devils team is made up of Connor Gaal, Kimo Wakim, Brandon Zelner, Dalton Jensen, Matt English, Cole Cottrell, Adam Kinder, Chance Beauchamp, Griffin Leggett and Connor Leggett. They will play in the NJB National Tournament, March 24-26.

BOYS’ FIFTH-GRADE

Newport Sailors 43, El Toro Chargers 34: The Sailors qualified for the NJB National Tournament, March 25-26, by winning the D4 Division super sectional championship.

Chris Okey led the team with 12 points. Max Stone had seven points and Derek Kula and Nick Hanna each added six points. Rounding out the offense, Connor Kelly had five points, James Newman, Blake Motal and Kris Picarelli each had two points and Robbie Rettig scored one point.

The defense, led by Newman and Drew Olson, was able to shut down the Chargers offense at critical points in the game.

Newport Sailors 49, El Modena Diablos 24: Chris Okey’s nine points and Drew Olson’s eight points helped lead the Sailors (12-1) to a solid victory. Also scoring were Robbie Rettig (seven points), Max Stone (six), Blake Motal (five), Connor Kelly (four), James Newman (three), Derek Lula (three), Nick Hanna (two) and Kris Picarelli (two).

Newport Sailors 53, Fullerton Sharpshooters 25: The Sailors played a strong game to finish the regular season in first place with a 13-1 record. Chris Okey and Nick Hanna led the Sailors in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Rounding out the offense, Max Stone had eight points, Kris Picarelli and Connor Kelly each had six points, James Newman had five points, Drew Olson and Derek Kula each had two points, and Blake Motal finished with one point.

Newport-Mesa Bruins: The Bruins (14-0) advanced through the And One Division sectional tournament, qualifying for the national tournament, March 25-26. Leading scorers for the Bruins this season were Zack Cornwell, Rob Rosenast, Jack Mc Bean, Ryan Griffin and Chris Nealey. Additional scoring was provided by Reid Meckler, Cayman Carter, Andy Doka, Nic Roco and Blake Grable.

PONY DIVISION

Calvary Chapel Eagles 6, Newport Harbor Cove Motors 4: The Eagles took early control of the game with a solid three-inning performance by starting pitcher Brian Kinder (eight strikeouts) and a five-run second inning, featuring Levi Moore’s two-run single. The Eagles added another run in the fourth inning. Cove Motors rallied in the top of the fourth inning with four runs, but the game was called due to darkness before the Eagles could take the field to end the inning.

BOYS’ UNDER-17

Palos Verdes Raiders 5, Newport Mesa 4: Newport Harbor High’s Morgan Webster scored twice and Brian Simonsma and Sergio Rodriguez each added a goal for Newport Mesa. Danny Gonzalez also had an impressive performance.
