CdM wins pair in tourney

Corona del Mar won its two matches and Newport Harbor split its two on the first day of the Orange County Boys’ Volleyball Championships on Friday.

The Sea Kings, playing at Edison High, defeated Laguna Beach (25-18, 25-10) and Woodbridge (25-16, 22-25, 15-13). Gus Ellis had 14 kills in the two matches, followed by Blaine Nielsen’s 13 and Adam Smith’s 10. Phil Bannon had 38 assists total.

The Sailors, playing at home, defeated Mission Viejo (25-23, 25-10) and lost to Huntington Beach (21-25, 25-23, 16-14). Weston Dunlap had 20 kills in the two matches for Newport Harbor. Kyle Caldwell recorded 12 kills against Huntington Beach.

Corona del Mar plays Esperanza at 9 a.m. at Edison, while Newport Harbor plays Foothill at Marina High at 10 a.m.
