UCI ATHLETES LAUDED

UC Irvine’s Dayne Comrie and Lauren Collins were chosen Big West Conference men’s track and women’s field athletes of the week, respectively, for the week ending Sunday.

Comrie was second in the men’s 400 meters at the Northridge Invitational, finishing in 47.54 seconds. That mark is the eighth-fastest time in school history. The junior also finished third in the 200 in 21.75, qualifying him for the Big West Conference Championships in May.

Collins won the women’s high jump at the Northridge Invitational with a leap of 5 feet, 8 3/4 inches. Her performance was enough to qualify her for the NCAA West Regional.

UCI’s Amber Steen was the conference women’s track athlete of the week for the week ending March 12.

Steen, a senior from Newport Harbor High, won the 800 meters at the Ben Brown Invitational. Her time of 2:12.96 was an automatic qualifier for the Big West Conference Championships and is three seconds shy of the qualifying mark for the NCAA regionals.

BERNHARD RECOGNIZED

UC Irvine women’s tennis player Becky Bernhard was named Big West Conference women’s tennis player of the week for the week ending Sunday.

The sophomore extended her winning streak at No. 1 singles to five with victories against Nebraska’s Kim Hartmann, ranked No. 63 in the nation, and Purdue’s Hala Sufi. Both victories were in straight sets.

AREA PRODUCTS SHINE

Athletes with local ties fared well at the NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships completed Saturday at the University of Georgia.

Newport Harbor High product Nicole Mackey, a senior at the University of Hawaii, finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.35 seconds.

Hayley Peirsol, a former teammate of Mackey with the Sailors, added a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:41.78) to her previously reported title in the 1,650 free for Auburn, where she is a junior.

Former Orange Coast College star Sherry Tsai, a junior at Cal, swam a leg on the Golden Bears’ 400 free relay team that finished sixth.

HAWKS DOUBLES UP

UC Irvine men’s volleyball assistant coach John Hawks will assume double duty for the Anteaters after women’s Coach Charlie Brande on Wednesday named him an assistant for the women’s program.

Hawks, in his fourth season with the men’s team, handles recruiting, game planning, scouting, video breakdown, perimeter defense and passing.

Under Hawks’ tutelage, UCI freshman Brent Asuka has become one of the nation’s top liberos. Asuka ranks third in the country in digs (3.25 per game).

Before coming to UCI, Hawks coached successful high school programs at Santa Margarita, San Dieguito and Edison, where he also played.

Hawks has also coached at the Newport Beach-based Balboa Bay Volleyball Club since 1998.
