A Long Beach man in a stolen car led police on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash and his arrest early Friday, police said.

John Shelton, 33, was arrested on suspicion of auto theft, possession of stolen property, felony pursuit and a parole violation, police said.

Police attempted to stop a white Toyota Camry after the driver made an unsafe turn near the intersection of the 55 Freeway and Del Mar Avenue, but the car sped away when officers approached.

As police pursued the car, it reached speeds in excess of 80 mph on Santa Ana Avenue before crashing into a fence around a house in the 2900 block of Cliff Drive in Newport Beach, police said.

The driver fled on foot, and Costa Mesa and Newport Beach police officers used police dogs and a helicopter to search for the driver.

Police found the man hiding in a business complex nearby and arrested him.
