BRITT LOMOND

Britt Lomond, who played Zorro’s nemesis Capitan Monastario on the TV series in the 1950s, died last week of kidney failure at the age of 80.

The Chicago-born renaissance man, who was a world-renowned fencer, a champion bridge player and horse jumper, died at the Huntington Shorecliffs retirement community, said Diane Lomond, his wife of almost 48 years.

The Lomonds moved to Huntington Beach 11 years ago from Studio City. During his time in Los Angeles, he appeared in about 1,500 movies, became a production manager and worked with Bob Hope and Phyllis Diller, among others. He studied art with Norman Rockwell.

Lomond served the country as a paratrooper in the South Pacific and Korea and was a decorated soldier, Diane Lomond said.

He’s most recognized for his role in “Zorro.” “Over in Europe it’s huge,” Diane Lomond said. “It’s really amazing, I mean, my God, it was so many years ago.”

Britt Lomond had been in kidney failure for a year but lived a relatively normal life until last month.

He is survived by his wife, daughter Evan and son Glase.
