Lions power up for sweep

COSTA MESA ? The Vanguard University baseball team swept a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader against Westmont College on Thursday, defeating the Warriors, 7-5 and 8-6, the latter in 10 innings.

The Lions (14-14, 7-11 in conference) slugged three home runs in the opener and scored three runs in the 10th inning to win the second game.

In the first game, Matt Voorhies, Erik Komatsu and Luke Iverson belted home runs. Iverson went 2 for 3 and drove in a game-high three RBI. Randy Smith had three hits and Jason Machado added two hits and an RBI for the Lions.

Michael Guernsey pitched seven innings of seven-hit ball to pick up the victory. Andrew Riddle tossed two innings of hitless relief for the save.

In the second game, Joe Candelaria slugged a two-run double and Zachary Leighton added an RBI single in the 10th inning.

Leighton went 4 for 4 with two runs and an RBI for the Lions, who play at Biola University on Saturday in a doubleheader.
