UCI’s Steen makes the mark

STANFORD ? UC Irvine’s Amber Steen qualified for the NCAA West Regional in the women’s 1,500 meters at the Stanford track and field invitational on Saturday.

Steen, a senior from Newport Harbor High, finished second in her heat with a time of 4:24.29. Her mark was the seventh-fastest in school history.

Among the other UCI athletes at the meet, John Kluve had a NCAA regional qualifying mark of 9:02.34 in the 3,000 steeplechase. The time was good enough for sixth place in the senior’s heat, and was the ninth-fastest time in school history.

Teammate Tim Hearst was 10th with a time of 9:14.77.

Mike Beerer, the Big West Conference Field Athlete of the Week, finished fifth in the men’s hammer throw with a toss of 203 feet, 7 inches. Brian Moon was second in his flight in the discus throw (163-4), James Lehigh placed third in his high jump flight (6-4 3/4 ) and Aaron Corbett finished third in his pole vault flight (15-1).

Tayler Cusick led the UCI women with a fourth-place finish in her triple jump section, jumping 36-9. Teammate Erricka Williams was seventh with a mark of 35-10.

Lauren Collins finished sixth in her high jump flight (5-5 3/4 ), with teammate Danielle St. John placing ninth (5-3 3/4 ). Laura Olvera was seventh in her heat of the 5,000 meters, finishing in 17:19.71.

The next competition for the Anteaters will be the Big West Challenge Cup on Friday at UCI.
