Seahawks fly low after a bright start

The Ocean View High boys’ volleyball team got off to a quick start in Golden West League play, but three victories have been tempered by losses to two of the league’s top teams.

Setbacks to defending league champion Costa Mesa and Estancia has dropped the Seahawks into a third-place tie in league standings.

Ocean View did defeat Orange, outlasting the visiting Panthers, 34-32, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23.

The Seahawks had been swept by both Costa Mesa and Estancia, two teams ranked among the top 10 in Division III.

Costa Mesa is ranked seventh in the poll, while Estancia is second to division leader Orange Lutheran.

“Those were two losses to two very good teams,” Ocean View coach Jimmy Harris said. “We’ve been inconsistent the past week, but we are getting better.

“We’ve revamped our practice structure. We’re focusing on every point, on every play. There’s a lot of talent and athletic ability on this team. We just need to bring it all together.”

Ocean View will need to bring it all together this week, as they will take on three league opponents in a three-day stretch.

Following a Wednesday game at Westminster ? too late for this edition ? he Seahawks host Saddleback at 4:30 p.m. today, then play at Santa Ana at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

In Sunset League volleyball, Edison rallied to defeat host Esperanza, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 15-12; Huntington Beach swept host Los Alamitos, 25-23, 25-17, 25-19, and survived Esperanza, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-5; and Marina fell to visiting Fountain Valley, 16-25, 25-21, 23-25, 27-25, 13-15.

Tommy Pestolesi had 29 kills to lead Edison against Esperanza. Trey Valbuena had nine kills for Huntington in its win over Los Alamitos. He had 16 kills and Alex Tonjes had nine kills in the win over Esperanza.
