Local middle school athletes ran to new meet records Friday at the Mount SAC Relays in Walnut.

The Mesa View seventh-grade girls’ sprint medley relay team of Devon Shinn, Erin Huff, Sara Craig and Elle Macy set a new record time in the division by finishing in 4:51.

The old meet record for the event was 4:54.

During the relay, Shinn ran a 2:30 in the 800 meters, Huff a 31.8 and Craig a 31.2 in 200 meters, and Macy ran a 1:07 in the 400 meters.

Another record was established by Josh Hernandez of Mesa View who shattered the seventh-grade boys’ triple jump mark with a leap of 37-feet-7. Hernandez’s leap broke the old mark of 32-6, which was set by Taylor Duc of Marine View in 2000.

Mesa View took 42 students to the meet and returned with 86 medals.

“I’ve been bringing teams here yearly since 1985 and things that happen at Mount SAC never cease to amaze me,” Mesa View Coach Kelly Painter said.

Mesa View’s boys’ seventh-grade sprint medley team of Karl Baranov, Tyler Ballard, Luke Davis and Hernandez were awarded first place in the event when Marine View was disqualified for using ineligible runners, Painter said.

The Mesa View “B” team of Wiliberto Ponce, Mark Lopez, John Martin and Benito Mendez won bronze in the event.
