The Laguna Beach High boys’ track and field team ran its Pacific Coast League record to 4-0 by sprinting past visiting University, 87-44, at Guyer Field.

Justin Rovin garnered three first-place finishes by winning the 110 and 300 hurdles, and long jump. Max Mullender was a two-time winner, taking the 800 and 1,600.

Other first-place finishers for Laguna included Behrang Ziaeian in the 400, Aman Bhatia in the 32,00, Nick Newell in the triple jump and the 4 by 400 relay team.

“Boys varsity remains on track to contend for a league championship,” said Laguna boys’ coach, Dave Brobeck. “The University team at every other level beat us, which was surprising to me. This program is clearly more polished than a year ago. Their numbers were enormous. We will have a real challenge at all levels this Thursday with Tesoro. This should be a tight meet for the boys’ varsity squad.”

In the girls’ meet, Laguna fell to University, 74-53.

The Breakers had a pair of three-time winners in Alex Crawley who won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, and Brittany Clark who won the 100, 200 and long jump.

“We held our own very well in the running events but faltered because of their strengths in the field events,” Laguna girls’ coach, Earl Towner, said. “This team continues to improve and show moxie as we near the end of the season.”

Clark and Crawley also turned in strong performances Saturday at the Irvine Invitational, which had been canceled three weeks prior, due to rain.

Clark won the 100 in 12.6, 200 in 26.7 and long jump at 15-feet-2. It was the first time Clark has competed in the long jump event, Towner said.

Crawley won three events. She set a personal record in the 800 with a 2:31, also won the 1,600 in 5:34, and tied with teammate Kelly McCarter for first-place in the 3,200.

The two finished the event in 13:05.

“Alex is rounding into great shape for CIF to come,” Towner said of Crawley.
