A Continental Airlines flight that left John Wayne Airport on Monday afternoon bound for Newark, N.J., landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport after a fuel leak was discovered, airport officials said.

None of the 97 passengers or five or six crew members on board were injured, John Wayne spokeswoman Jenny Wedge said.

Continental Flight 386 left Orange County at 4 p.m. and was apparently losing fuel from a tank on one of the wings. The cause of the fuel leak was unclear.

“We don’t know what the nature of the problem is. Apparently they even inspected our airfield to see if there was anything that could have caused it, and there’s no problem here,” Wedge said, adding that no evidence of leaked fuel was discovered on the ground.

The plane landed safely in Los Angeles at 4:25 p.m., LAX spokesman Tom Winfrey said.

Officials at Continental Airlines could not immediately be reached for comment.
