Anteaters close in on title

NORTHRIDGE ? The No. 1-ranked UC Irvine men’s volleyball team took down Cal State Northridge, 30-27, 30-24, 30-24, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action on Wednesday night.

It marked the 20th consecutive victory for the Anteaters, who halted Northridge’s seven-match winning streak and improved to 26-3 overall, 19-2 in conference.

Three UC Irvine players were in double figures in kills, including Matt Webber (12), Paul Spittle (11) and Jayson Jablonsky (10). Brent Asuka added a match-high 10 digs. The Matadors (18-9, 13-8) were paced by Brian Waite’s 16 kills.

UC Irvine plays host No. 8 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 7 p.m. in its regular-season finale.

The Anteaters have already clinched a berth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament and will lock up the No. 1 seed with a win over the Gauchos.
